Located at the University of Missouri South Farm, the Swine Farm houses hundreds of Landrace and Yorkshire hogs. At least one room is dedicated to each phase of swine production giving students hands-on experience with all aspects of swine production. Additional facilities have been added to the operation, including research facilities for growing pigs and biomedical pigs.

History

The swine program was established at the University of Missouri in 1904 as a part of the initial Department of Animal Husbandry. In 1936, the Missouri Agricultural Experiment Station became involved in research for swine improvement. During this time, the college purchased more farmland, located southeast of Columbia, as a part of South Farm. A central swine farrowing house with adjoining shed and feed pens were built on this land. With financial support from producers four more barns were added in 1975.
