Mallory Rahe Named 2022 J.W. Burch Specialist at 2022 Celebration of Excellence

Mallory Rahe is the 2022 recipient of the J.W. Burch State Specialist Agricultural Extension Award, presented at CAFNR’s Celebration of Excellence event April 19. Rahe earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agricultural economics from the University of Illinois-Champaign and her PhD in regional planning from the University of Illinois-Champaign. She joined the university in 2019 as an assistant Extension professor of agriculture and applied economics. In 2020, Rahe became the education director of the Agricultural Business and Policy Extension Program and the director of the Missouri Small Business Development Center for Agriculture, Food and Forestry. Three new members were inducted into the CAFNR Teaching Academy as part of the college’s Celebration of Excellence event April 19. Membership in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Teaching Academy will be reserved for CAFNR faculty who have received a distinguished teaching award on a national, regional, or university level that crosses disciplines. During his time leading students at MU, John Tummons, an assistant teaching professor of agricultural education and leadership, has earned numerous awards and honors – the most recent of which was CAFNR’s Golden Apple Award. The honor, which was given to Tummons during a surprise classroom visit in mid-April, is awarded to CAFNR teachers who go above and beyond in teaching and advising.

Claire Shipp Receives 2022 Mark Twain Fellowship

Claire Shipp, a graduate student in agricultural and applied economics, recently received the Mark Twain Fellowship, a highly competitive, MU-sponsored award that supports one Mizzou senior or recent graduate each year to pursue graduate study abroad in any discipline. The fellowship includes a $50,000 scholarship to cover tuition. Shipp earned the Truman Scholarship last year, and was planning on using that scholarship to study at The University of Oxford. Abner Womack Receives the Jay B. Dillingham Award for Agricultural Leadership and Excellence

The Agricultural Business Council of Kansas City honored Abner Womack May 18 at a luncheon in the Chamber Board Room in Kansas City’s historic Union Station. Womack, Professor Emeritus of Agricultural Economics and co-founder of the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI-MU) at the University of Missouri, received the Council’s highest award, the Jay B. Dillingham Award for Agricultural Leadership and Excellence. His work at FAPRI earned him national recognition and built upon his earlier work at USDA’s Economic Research Service where he developed econometric models that focused on the structure of the global food system. Pei Liu Accepted into the Early Career Research Development Fellows Program

Pei Liu, assistant professor in hospitality management, has been accepted into the Early Career Research Development Fellowship through MU’s Office of Research. The Early Career Research Development Fellows Program is aimed at full-time, pre-tenure faculty who are seeking opportunities for strategic career planning and skill development in the area of academic research. During the three-year program, participants are expected to attend monthly 1.5-hour sessions on a range of topics, engage in discussions with peer researchers and participate in individual consultations with staff in the Office of Research and Economic Development.

CAFNR Joy of Discovery Seed Grant Program Winners Announced

The first batch of proposals funded by CAFNR's Joy of Discovery Seed Grant Program has been announced. The Joy of Discovery Seed Grant Program supports nascent, collaborative, multi transdisciplinary research with the goal of developing a competitive proposal for federal funding.
