Accepting the Challenge
Working toward earning his Precision Agriculture Technology Certificate from the University of Missouri, Bo Young understands the importance of implementing precision practices on the farm. Young, who is also a climate activation specialist with The Climate Corporation, works with farmers and producers, helping them incorporate Climate FieldView technology in their operation. Young and The Climate Corporation are now partnering with MU Extension and the MU College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) to bring important technology and datasets to the CAFNR Agricultural Research Centers. He has shared the message at several Research Center Field Days.

Turning Data into Insights
Excessive spring rain, trade disputes and African swine fever have disrupted agricultural markets in 2019. Despite reduced 2019 United States corn and soybean production prospects, prices for many commodities are under downward pressure because of the many factors that have weakened demand. Economists with the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute (FAPRI) and the MU Agricultural Markets and Policy (AMAP) team release the annual U.S. Baseline Outlook report each spring, and provide an update to that report each fall.

A Global Partner
Sarah Lovell’s research focuses broadly on the analysis and design of multifunctional landscapes, with an emphasis on agroforestry and urban agriculture, so working with UMCA was a no-brainer. Lovell is now joining the Center for Agroforestry as its new director. Lovell officially began her duties as the H.E. Garrett Endowed Chair Professor and director of the Center on Aug. 12.

Important Interactions
To promote how diverse the projects at the Research Centers are, and to highlight the strengths of each Center, the college spearheaded the creation of a magazine, titled, “Road to Discovery.” This is the third issue of the magazine, with this year’s publication focusing on a variety of topics, including drought, beekeeping and blackberries.

Bruce Barrett, professor and director of undergraduate studies, has been named the interim director of the Division of Plant Sciences in the University of Missouri College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources. Barrett’s interim director appointment is effective Sept. 1.
