The Perrotis College campus at the American Farm School is situated on the eastern edge of Greece’s second largest city, Thessaloniki. It is the oldest U.S. educational institution founded in Greece and home to one of only two full-time USDA research programs in Europe. This beautiful 280-acre campus not only offers magnificent views of Mt. Olympus and the sea but gives students the chance to learn about Greek life, food and culture.  

Also included in this program are educational visits to Athens, the capital of Greece, Meteora, the home of six monasteries built high into the mountain around the 14th century, and Mount Olympus, well-known as the home of the Greek gods.

Location

Located in Thessaloniki, a 40-45 minute flight from Athens, Perrotis College offers a unique experience to delve into the long spanning history of Greece. Immerse yourself in the culture by participating in Greek dancing, cooking and language sessions. Enjoy living in close proximity to the sea, beautiful architecture and amazing food.

Accommodation and Meals

Students will be housed in residence halls on the Perrotis campus. Rooms and bathrooms are shared. All housing costs are included in the program fee.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided and are included in the program cost. However, students will be responsible for additional meals/off-campus dining expenses. Though the individual spending habits of each student will vary, please see the budget information below for an estimate of the average out-of-pocket meal expenses.

Program Travel

Students will arrange their own round-trip travel to Thessaloniki and will be provided with suggested flight dates and arrival times. For budgeting purposes, estimates are provided below.

Perrotis College will coordinate student pick-up (between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on arrival day only) from the Thessaloniki airport and transfer to the campus. Students who wish to have the cost of their flight billed directly to their MU accounts should contact the Director of International Study Programs, as this can be arranged through MU’s preferred travel agency. Once in Greece, all program-related travel is included in the program fee.

Academics

Students will be enrolled in 12 credits of AFNR _0590, an International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources “placeholder” course. This “placeholder” will transfer back to MU as the following courses graded on an S/U basis. Students must complete a Course Proposal for Study Abroad with assistance from the CAFNR Director of International Study Programs. Once this is completed, students will work with their advisors to determine how the credits will count toward their individual graduation plans.

Students take the Greek Cultural Experience course (AFNR 2191: International Agriculture and Natural Resources Humanities – 3 credits) plus 3 additional classes in the following fields of study:

  • Animal Science (Fall Only)
  • Digital Marketing
  • Environmental Science
  • Food Science & Technology
  • Sustainable Agriculture & Management

Please be aware that there will be a mandatory orientation class meeting prior to departure. Participants will be notified of the class meeting details via email.
