Location

The birthplace of Mozart and a declared UNESCO World Heritage Site, Salzburg has a rich and vibrant heritage that is reflected in its many concerts, festivals and events. Less crowded than Switzerland, Austria is a hidden gem and one of Europe’s prime spots for outdoor recreation. Its proximity to mountains and lakes offers a variety of outdoor activities ranging from skiing and snowboarding to hiking, mountain biking and kayaking. Salzburg is also home to the Austrian company, Red Bull, and its Hanger-7 where the Flying Bulls aircraft fleet and Formula 1 race cars are stored.

Participants will not only take in the sights on various excursions around Salzburg, but will also have the opportunity to enjoy field trips to Munich and Vienna as well as convenient access to seven bordering European countries.

Accommodation and Meals

All housing costs are included in the program fee. To maximize cultural involvement, students may choose to live in Austrian homes where they take their breakfasts and dinners. Weekday lunches are provided by Salzburg College while classes are in session.

Most students find the provided meals to be more than sufficient. However, individual spending and dining habits may vary. Students wishing to dine more expensively may need to supplement with additional out-of-pocket funds and should also budget for the occasional restaurant meal during their own free time.

Program Travel

Students will arrange their own round-trip travel to Salzburg and will be provided with suggested flight dates and arrival times. For budgeting purposes, estimates are provided below. Students who wish to have the cost of their flight billed directly to their MU accounts should contact the Director of Study Abroad to make arrangements through MU’s preferred travel agency. Transportation from the Salzburg airport to Salzburg College will be provided. Once in Salzburg, all program-related travel is included in the program fee.

Academics

Students will be enrolled in up to 15 credits of AFNR _0590, an International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources “placeholder” course. This “placeholder” enrollment corresponds to the US credits in which students will be enrolled at Salzburg College. Classes meet Monday-Thursday according to standard US university meeting times. Games take place on weekends with practice three times per week. The coaching internship option includes two practices per week, occasional coaches meetings, periodical weekend games and enrollment in the associated internship preparation course. At the conclusion of the program, final grades are issued by Salzburg College. These credits transfer back to MU on an A/F basis, with each Salzburg College credit transferring as 1 MU credit.

Students must complete a Course Proposal for Study Abroad with assistance from the CAFNR Director of Study Abroad. Once this is completed, students will work with their advisors to determine how the credits will count toward their individual graduation plans.

Please be aware that there will be a mandatory orientation class meeting prior to departure. Participants will be notified of the class meeting details via email.
