Location

Barcelona is a bustling city where students can explore the shops and restaurants of Las Ramblas, take in the mosaic artwork and magnificent architecture of Gaudí or spend the afternoon soaking up the sun on the beach. Not far from Dublin, London, Paris, Berlin or Rome, Spain is an ideal location for a semester abroad. In addition to coursework, students also have the opportunity to partake in Spanish cooking classes, art museum visits and a trip to the beach.

Accommodation and Meals

Students will be housed in self-catered apartments or residence hall with shared occupancy bedrooms.

Students will be responsible for their own meal costs. Though the individual spending habits of each student will vary, please see the budget information below for an estimate of the average out-of-pocket meal expenses.

Program Travel

Students will need to go to Chicago to apply in person for their visa. Associated travel and fees are not included in the program cost.

Students will arrange their own round-trip travel to Barcelona and will be provided with suggested flight dates and arrival times. For budgeting purposes, estimates are provided below. Students who wish to have the cost of their flight billed directly to their MU accounts should contact the Director of Study Abroad to make arrangements through MU’s preferred travel agency. Transportation from the Barcelona airport directly to the accommodation will be provided. Once in Barcelona, all program-related travel is included in the program fee.

Academics

Students will be enrolled in 12-15 credits of AFNR _0590, an International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources “placeholder” course. This “placeholder” enrollment corresponds to the 24-30 ECTS credits in which students will be enrolled at SAI. At the conclusion of the program, final grades are issued by SAI. These credits transfer back to MU on an A/F basis, with 24-30 ECTS credits transferring as 12-15 MU credits.  The estimated program fee below includes 12 MU credits.

Students must complete a Course Proposal for Study Abroad with assistance from the CAFNR Director of Study Abroad. Once this is completed, students will work with their advisors to determine how the credits will count toward their individual graduation plans.

Please be aware that there will be a mandatory orientation class meeting prior to departure. Participants will be notified of the class meeting details via email.
