Q: Why did you choose Mizzou?
A: Growing up in a small town in Missouri, I was drawn to a university like Mizzou because of the opportunities a large university provides to grow and make valuable connections. Choosing CAFNR was also a significant factor in my decision.

Q: Why CAFNR/your chosen major?
A: I chose CAFNR because, although the University of Missouri is large, CAFNR offers a close-knit, family-like atmosphere. I know each of my professors personally, and they also know me. They show genuine interest in my academic success and overall growth.

Q: What were/are some challenges you faced as a first-generation student?
A: My biggest challenge was navigating the college search without a clear idea of what to look for in a university or for my education. As the first in my family to pursue a bachelor’s degree, I didn’t have a direct reference for choosing a school.

Q: Who has helped you overcome those challenges?
A: Fortunately, I had the support of incredible teachers and mentors who were CAFNR alumni. They encouraged me to explore Mizzou, and their guidance ultimately led me to choose CAFNR. During my time at Mizzou, the agriculture education department has been fantastic and helped me find my place on campus.

Q: What’s your favorite part of attending Mizzou?
A: My favorite part of attending Mizzou is the amazing opportunities for students to get involved. There are so many clubs for everyone’s interests. Mizzou also has the resources of a large university to be successful.

Q: What advice would you give other first-generation college students?
A: I would encourage students to take advantage of all opportunities and not fear the unknown. Being a first-generation college student can be scary because you don’t know what to expect. CAFNR made the transition easy, and I am thankful for all the individuals who have been a part of my college career!

Q: How will your college experience impact your future?
A: My college experience with CAFNR has given me some of the best connections for a future career, as well as amazing friendships. I know that I can thank the University of Missouri and CAFNR for the preparation they have given me to take my next steps in life.
