What do you do in your current role with the University of Missouri?
I am a livestock specialist for the East Central Region. I serve Callaway, Cole, Gasconade, Maries, Montogomery, Osage, and Warren County. I provide programs and educational opportunities to livestock producers in my area based on unbiased research-based information. My primary focus is on beef producers with an emphasis in pasture and grazing management. I am an agent for the Grassland Partnership Climate Smart Program that is an USDA funded program aimed at improving grasslands management. I am the central region coordinator for the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program. I am also involved in the Pearls of Production Women in Agriculture Program. Outside of MU Extension, I serve as the secretary for the Callaway County soil and water conservation district board.
How long have you worked in this position?
8 months – started the beginning of January!
What is your favorite part about the work you do?
My favorite part of the job is being able to work with local livestock producers and provide them with information that they can incorporate to improve or apply to their operations. In return, I enjoy learning new concepts and ideas from these producers. No farm or producer is the same. I embrace my colleagues’ knowledge and expertise to guide me as I begin my journey with MU Extension.
How are you helping MU A&E Extension reach our #2xAg2030 goal?
I am helping reach that goal by providing programs and unbiased research-based information to livestock producers to equip them with resources to add value to each of their operations. The Show-Me-Select program is a great example and provides producers the opportunity to sell value-added heifers. The Grassland Partnership is another great example. It allows producers the opportunity to improve farm productivity, profits, and gain access to future markets.
What is something your CAFNR and MU Extension teammates may not know about you?
In my free time you will find me spending time on the farm with my Husband and 3-year-old daughter. We have small cow/calf operation with registered Herefords, registered angus, and commercial cattle. My favorite hobby is to hunt deer and turkey!
What is your hometown, place of high school graduation, and degrees/universities?
I am from Paris, Mo. and graduated from Paris High School. I then went to Moberly Area Community College and received my associate degree in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. After MACC, I attended the University of Missouri for both my bachelor’s degree in Plant Science: Breeding, Biology and Biotechnology and my master’s degree, also in Plant Science, specializing in plant, insect and microbial science.
