Ben Knapp Named Buddy Temple Visiting Scholar

Ben Knapp, associate professor in the School of Natural Resources, was named the first Buddy Temple Visiting Scholar through the T.L.L. Temple Foundation. The Temple Foundation first purchased a parcel of land in 1902, which is now part of the Boggy Slough Conservation Area (BSCA) in Lufkin, Texas. To honor Buddy Temple, who acquired BSCA in 2013, the foundation named three programmatic elements of BSCA after him: The Buddy Temple Visiting Scholar, The Buddy Temple Graduate Fellow (graduate student), and the Buddy Temple Symposium. Clark Gantzer Receives 2021 Soil and Water Conservation Society’s Associate Editor Excellence Award

Clark Gantzer, professor emeritus of soil, environmental and atmospheric sciences, was the recipient of the 2021 Soil and Water Conservation Society’s (SWCS) Associate Editor Excellence Award in recognition of associate editors for their contributions to the success and development of the Journal of Soil and Water Conservation. Gantzer’s research focuses on soil and water conservation, and management and applied soil physics. The SWCS awards are presented each year to individuals and organizations who have made outstanding contributions in advocating and advancing the conservation of soil, water and related natural resources.

Cheryl Recker Earns Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Award — Technical/Paraprofessional

The Mizzou Staff Advisory Council honored 10 Outstanding Staff Awards recipients and those celebrating 40 years or more of service to Mizzou with a virtual celebration recently. The finalists and winners of the Outstanding Staff Awards were nominated by their peers for their exemplary service and dedication to Mizzou. Cheryl Recker, a senior research and lab technician at the Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center (HARC) in New Franklin, received the Chancellor’s Outstanding Staff Award — Technical/Paraprofessional. Recker graduated from CAFNR with a degree in plant sciences and has worked with CAFNR since 2017.

Two Retired CAFNR Professors Receive 2021 Awards from Missouri Park and Recreation Association

Two retired CAFNR Parks, Recreation and Sport professors recently received awards from the Missouri Park and Recreation Association. Jerry Hitzhusen (pictured left at a previous award ceremony), associate professor emeritus, was inducted into the Missouri Recreation and Parks Hall of Fame. His career, which started with Mizzou in 1974, focuses on therapeutic recreation. He is an international advocate for disabled athletes and is committed to recreation therapy for veterans and advocacy for minority aging populations. Hitzhusen secured more than $6 million in therapeutic recreation grants and programs over his time at Mizzou, and has received the PALESTRA Leadership Award…
