Kent Shannon, assistant teaching professor in the Agricultural Systems Technology (AST) degree program, was awarded CAFNR’s 2026 Outstanding Early Career Teacher Award. He accepted the award at the college’s annual Celebration of Excellence ceremony April 23.

Since starting his teaching position in 2020, Shannon has made a wide-reaching impact on students both in and out of the classroom.

“Shortly after Leon Schumacher retired, Kent became the face of the AST program,” said Heike Buecking, director of the Division of Plant Science and Technology. “Whether as a teacher in the classroom, or as a mentor outside of the classroom, as AST program coordinator, as advisor for the Torq’N Tigers team, the Alpha MU, the AST Club or during student recruitment or FFA events.”

Shannon’s involvement in the AST program and positive influence on students reaches beyond current undergraduates.

“Kent is passionate about this field, and it shows in his teaching,” said Will Hanson, a 2025 plant sciences alumnus. “He is enthusiastic and excited to share new methods and ideas with students. These often come to life in his labs, where students have the opportunity to gain hands-on experiences with new technology.”

Shannon’s teaching philosophy takes a practical approach, combining classroom instruction, hands-on instruction and on-farm demonstrations. His well-rounded education strategy combined with his welcoming personality makes him a mentor for many students.

“Kent has taken our very small program and done huge things with it, including making it feel like a family,” Stephen Jerome, an AST major, said. “Everyone in AST looks up to Kent in their own way, but we all see Kent as much more than just a professor.”
