University of Missouri freshman Gwynivere Newbrough was recognized as CAFNR’s Outstanding Freshman at the college’s annual Celebration of Excellence ceremony April 23.

Newbrough is double majoring in biochemistry and biology, pursuing a future career in medicine. Her experience with Rolandic Epilepsy has shaped her goal to become a pediatric neurologist specializing in epilepsy.

“Gwynivere has always struck me as an intellectually ambitious student who also exudes warmth and compassion,” said Alison Rutledge, a senior academic advisor in the Division of Biochemistry. “Her emotional intelligence is a crucial quality that will serve her well as she continues her involvement at Mizzou and in her future as a physician.”

In her short time at Mizzou, Newbrough has already begun to make her mark throughout the student community, embracing campus involvement whole-heartedly. She is a member of Biochemistry Club, Multicultural and International Student Council (MISC), Fencing Club and Psychology Club. She was also a member of the Biochemistry Freshman Interest Group (FIG) in Fall 2025.

“I have also witnessed Gwynivere’s leadership qualities during our FIG course,” Rutledge said. “When students were tasked with an assignment, she enjoyed brainstorming with her group but was also deft at gently redirecting their efforts to make sure that they met the goals of the assignment and stayed on task.”

Rutledge said she believes Newbrough has all the qualities of a successful student and medical pioneer in the making.

“The combination of these qualities – academic excellence and strong interpersonal skills – are the key to a successful future as a physician,” she said.
