Beef cattle research was introduced at the Thompson Research Center in 1963, and since that time the site has served as an important research location that emphasizes premium cattle genetics. Thompson, part of the University of Missouri (MU) College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) Agricultural Experiment Station, is continuing to build on that prestigious research resume in 2021. With the help of a USDA Rural Business Development Grant, the Research Center has developed its own feedlot allowing specialists the opportunity to feed and keep cattle in the state and build Missouri’s economic impact.

Serving the Animal Industry

For nearly 25 years, David Patterson has helped Missouri cattlemen get the most out of their beef cattle operations. Patterson piloted the Show-Me-Select Replacement Heifer Program early in his University of Missouri career. For 14 straight years, Robert Sites has led University of Missouri students to Thailand for an educational study abroad experience focused on biodiversity and conservation. The 3-week program, which takes place over winter break, coincides with Thailand’s dry season – the best time of the year to be in the country for biodiversity and conservation projects. ‘The Pinnacle of My Career’

Growing up in Slovakia, a young Peter Sutovsky would often hold his own science-based lectures in front of his elementary classmates.
