Q: Why did you choose to come to the University of Missouri?
A: Going to Mizzou was an easy choice for me. My family has had season tickets to Mizzou football for years, so I was a Mizzou Tiger fan from day one and attended many games growing up. When I knew I wanted to major in agriculture Mizzou seemed like a natural fit for me all the way around. My mom is a Mizzou CAFNR alum and she shared the benefits of her experiences at Mizzou and how the CAFNR alumni network has supported her career in the years since she graduated. When I added it all up, it was clear that CAFNR was the right place for me.
Q: Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
A: Like many students, I changed my major after my freshman year from animal sciences to agriculture. After getting into the coursework, I realized that I could experience a wider range of disciplines by majoring in agriculture through the emphasis areas I was able to choose. I still took courses in animal sciences, but also got a solid background in business and leadership, which will benefit me no matter where my career path goes.
Q: Did you partake in any research, study abroad, or internship opportunities? What did you enjoy about those experiences?
A: I completed two internships as a CAFNR student. Between my sophomore and junior years, I was an agriculture intern at Show-Me Ethanol in Carrollton, MO. This experience exposed me to the grain commodities side of the industry and allowed me to work both in the plant and inside the office. The next summer between my junior and senior years I completed an integrated systems internship with Ag-Power Inc., where I learned about technologies, software and systems on John Deere equipment and how those systems benefit farmers in the field. This position allowed me to do hands-on work on equipment and learn about the latest products in development from John Deere. The thing I enjoyed most about both internships was the opportunity to meet people and build my professional network.
Q: What is a favorite memory you have during your time in CAFNR?
A: My favorite CAFNR memories are from the Ag Unlimited fundraising event. I attended this gathering of CAFNR alumni and supporters twice during my years at Mizzou and always had a great time meeting new people and networking with CAFNR grads. As a CAFNR scholarship recipient I am thankful for the amazing support our college receives from alumni and donors that believe in the mission of supporting the future of agriculture in Missouri.
Q: How did your degree program prepare you for the future?
A: CAFNR’s agriculture degree program has prepared me for the future by giving me a well-rounded experience in multiple disciplines within the agriculture industry. I know that I will draw from the knowledge I have gained throughout my career.
Q: What are your future plans?
A: I have accepted a position as a loan officer with Goppert Financial Bank in Lathrop, MO, where I will specialize in agriculture lending to help farmers and other ag businesses with their financial needs. I look forward to working with customers to help them expand their operations and finding ways that I can support the rural communities served by Goppert Financial Bank.
