Research Summary
Dr. Jaume Padilla's research program focuses on understanding the mechanisms linking metabolic and cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Jaume Padilla is a professor in Nutrition and Exercise Physiology at the University of Missouri with a joint appointment at the Harry S. Memorial VA Hospital. His research program focuses on understanding the mechanisms linking metabolic and cardiovascular disease. A primary focus is the study of mechanisms causing endothelial insulin resistance and vascular dysfunction in the context of physical inactivity, obesity, and type 2 diabetes. A detailed understanding of the precipitating factors and mechanisms underlying the defects in vascular insulin actions is critical for the development of therapeutic strategies aimed at improving glycemic control and cardiovascular outcomes. Dr. Padilla’s research, funded by NIH and VA, is integrative and incorporates biochemical and molecular techniques, in vitro cell and tissue culture models (e.g., study of isolated arteries), in vivo studies in genetic mouse models and large animals, as well as clinical studies in human participants using non-invasive vascular imaging modalities including Doppler and contrast-enhanced ultrasound. Dr. Padilla has over 175 peer-reviewed publications; serves as an associate editor for Journal of Applied Physiology; is a standing member of the NIH Integrative Vascular Physiology and Pathology study section; and is the recipient of the 2023 Impact Award by the APS Environmental and Exercise Physiology Section.
