Student success in CAFNR

Attending college is an exciting leap into independence, opportunity, and growth. New freedoms include new responsibilities – especially when it comes to academics. Here are some tips on how to set yourself up for success.

Meet Your Advisor Early Your academic advisor is more than just a course scheduler – they’re your personal guide through the maze of college life. Advisors can help you stay on track, avoid unnecessary classes, and even connect you with internships or research opportunities. Meet with them during early registration to discuss your goals, interests, and degree requirements.

Use Your Digital Toolkit – These tools can help you stay organized and informed:

  • Stellic: Plan your degree path, track progress, and explore course options.
  • MU Connect: Schedule appointments with your advisor, instructors, and access campus resources.
  • Canvas: Your central hub for class assignments, announcements, and grades.
  • Email: Check it daily – important updates land here. Friendly reminder to check for CAFNR Info (weekly) and LATitude (monthly).
  • Mizzou One: A one-stop portal for everything from registration to financial aid and campus services.

Get Involved in Clubs and Organizations – Join a student club or organization to build community, develop leadership skills, and discover passions that complement your academic journey. Plus, it’s a great way to make friends and feel more connected to campus.

Don’t Hesitate to Ask for Help – You’ve heard it before and you’ll hear it again: If you are confused about a lecture, struggling with time management, or feeling overwhelmed, REACH OUT. Professors, teaching assistants, advisors, and even peers are here to support you. CAFNR’s Office of Academic Programs doors are also open to help you.

Academic success at Mizzou isn’t solely about hitting the books – it’s about building relationships, using resources, and staying proactive. The habits you form in your first semester will shape your entire college experience. Lean in, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to explore.
