Sonja Wilhelm Stanis, professor and director of undergraduate studies in the School of Natural Resources (SNR), has been chosen for CAFNR’s 2025 Outstanding Senior Teacher Award. Wilhelm Stanis also serves as associate director of SNR. She received this honor at CAFNR’s annual awards ceremony, Celebration of Excellence, on Thursday, April 17.

Although she has been the chief academic officer in SNR since 2019, Wilhelm Stanis continues to contribute to curriculum. Despite a significant administrative role, she still teaches 2-3 courses per year.

Peer reviews for Wilhelm Stanis show that she has established herself as a highly effective teacher; she also has a special relationship with students, said Pat Market, SNR director.

“Her professional relationships with both graduate and undergraduate students have extended far beyond their graduation dates. Many of her recent publications feature students as co-authors,” he said.

Wilhelm Stanis consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that her students thrive, said Josephine Hall, master’s student and advisee. Her dedication to fostering a welcoming and supportive classroom environment is unwavering, and it is evident that she cares deeply about her students’ success.

“I frequently find myself engaging in thoughtful conversations with her after lecture, as I am interested in her research and material covered in class,” Hall said.

She is an extraordinary student advocate, according to Michael Molloy, PhD student and advisee.

“When I first approached her as my advisor, I was a full-time parent, employee and planning a wedding. As a fellow parent, she recognized and supported the ideal that family comes first and has ensured me that I can continue my education remotely in Kansas City, while still meeting familial obligations. Dr. Wilhelm Stanis has been willing to advocate to my committee on my behalf regarding my disabled veteran status which can impact me during comprehensive exams.”
