Shanon Dickerson, director of international study programs, has received the International Engagement Award from the University of Missouri’s Council on International Initiatives.

Since joining CAFNR in 2016, Dickerson has expanded study abroad offerings from a few programs to 21 in 16 countries across Europe, Asia, Oceania and Latin America. Under her leadership, CAFNR now has an 18% study abroad participation rate.

She has built sustainable program models, developed more than a dozen international partnerships and created internship opportunities that give students hands-on global experience. Since 2017, she has facilitated study abroad for 885 students and launched “Go Global!” courses that bring international perspectives to students who cannot travel.

“In every facet of her work, Shanon exemplifies the values of international engagement,” said nominator Bryan Garton, senior associate dean and director of academic programs. “She is not only a steward of global learning but a catalyst for transformation — empowering students, faculty and institutions to embrace the world beyond. Her achievements reflect the spirit of the award and set a standard of excellence in cooperation in higher education.”

Dickerson has recruited and trained more than 20 faculty members to lead study abroad programs. Her collaborative approach to marketing and student support has made international education more visible and accessible.

“As a result of [Shanon’s] innovation and strong relationship building, CAFNR students now benefit
from programs that blend academics, cultural immersion, and professional growth,” said Genevieve Howard, web and social media consultant. “She helped establish key partnerships with institutions such as Lincoln University in New Zealand and Salzburg College in Austria, which pairs coursework with customized internships abroad. She continues to refine programs to meet student needs. She navigates the complexities of international education with a thoughtful, solutions-focused approach. Shanon is widely respected throughout our college for her kindness, mentorship, and dedication to student success.”
