Addison Byrne Receives 2022 Outstanding Early Career Teaching Award at Celebration of Excellence

Addison Byrne, instructor in the Division of Animal Sciences, received the Outstanding Early Career Teaching Award at CAFNR’s 2022 Celebration of Excellence awards ceremony, held Tuesday, April 19. Byrne earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees, both in animal sciences, from the University of Missouri. She received her certificate of college teaching in 2019 from Mizzou as well. Byrne has served as an instructor within the division since 2018. Robin Rotman Receives 2021 Outstanding Early Career Teaching Award at Celebration of Excellence

Robin Rotman, assistant professor in the School of Natural Resources (SNR), received the 2021 Outstanding Early Career Teaching Award at CAFNR’s 2022 Celebration of Excellence awards ceremony, held Tuesday, April 19. Rotman earned her bachelor’s degree in geology from Sewanee: The University of the South, in Tennessee; her master’s in water science, policy and management from The University of Oxford, where she was a Rhodes Scholar; and a Juris Doctor (JD) from Yale Law School. During his time leading students at MU, John Tummons, an assistant teaching professor of agricultural education and leadership, has earned numerous awards and honors – the most recent of which was CAFNR’s Golden Apple Award. The honor, which was given to Tummons during a surprise classroom visit in mid-April, is awarded to CAFNR teachers who go above and beyond in teaching and advising.

Ernie Verslues, president and CEO of MFA Incorporated, recently shared what he’s learned as a leader of a major company through CAFNR’s Executive-in-Residence program. Verslues was on the University of Missouri campus April 12-13, where he met with students through class lectures, roundtable discussions, one-on-one meetings and other informal interactions.

Jordon Wade to Speak at National Academy of Sciences’ Discussion

Jordon Wade, assistant professor in the School of Natural Resources, was asked to be a part of the National Academy of Sciences’ discussion on “State of Our Soils” on Friday, April 22. The State of the Soil event celebrates the science of soil health and soil health management during a wide-ranging discussion with panelists who will talk about soil health aspects in their respective regions. Jackie Limberg on the Board of Directors for the American Autonomic Society

Jackie Limberg, assistant professor in nutrition and exercise physiology, is on the board for the American Autonomic Society (AAS). Limberg is also the chair of the communications committee. AAS was established to bring together individuals from diverse disciplines who share an interest in the structure and function of the autonomic nervous system. The society sponsors annual meetings and provides a point of contact among the many interested clinical and basic scientists who wish to communicate across disciplinary lines.

Elizabeth Parks Named President of the Obesity Society

Elizabeth Parks, professor in nutrition and exercise physiology, was recently named president of the Obesity Society. The Obesity Society is a scientific membership organization dedicated to improving people’s lives by advancing scientific-based understanding of causes, consequences, prevention and treatment of obesity.

A Guinness World Record holder for highest kneeling jump (male), senior Tyler Lutz is gaining valuable hands-on learning experiences through the nutrition and exercise physiology degree program. Courses such as NEP 4200: Sports Performance and Conditioning have given Lutz an opportunity to improve his athletic performances through new procedures, techniques and modalities.

One for the Record Books

A multi-sport athlete at Southern Boone County High School in Ashland, Mo., Tyler Lutz quickly found success as a triple and long jumper on his school’s track and field team. That success turned into a passion for Lutz, as he began precise exercises to maximize his leaping ability. Lutz has continued to perfect his craft as a student at the University of Missouri. Claire Shipp Receives 2022 Mark Twain Fellowship

Claire Shipp, a graduate student in agricultural and applied economics, recently received the Mark Twain Fellowship, a highly competitive, MU-sponsored award that supports one Mizzou senior or recent graduate each year to pursue graduate study abroad in any discipline. The fellowship includes a $50,000 scholarship to cover tuition. Shipp earned the Truman Scholarship last year, and was planning on using that scholarship to study at The University of Oxford. Q&A with Tamra Reall

What do you do in your current role with the University of Missouri? I am a field specialist in horticulture in the Kansas City area. I coordinate the Extension Master Gardeners of Greater Kansas City, one of the three largest chapters in the state with over 400 motivated volunteers. We train and work with these volunteers to offer horticulture programing for the public, such as a gardening hotline, speakers bureau, children’s programming, 16 community gardens of various specialties and video creation for our YouTube channel.
