
David Mendoza‑Cózatl, professor in the Division of Plant Science and Technology, has been named the 2026 Brady J. Deaton Fellow in International Agriculture in recognition of his outstanding contributions to global food security, international research collaboration and scientific leadership. He was honored at CAFNR’s Celebration of Excellence awards ceremony April 23.
Mendoza‑Cózatl is a leading researcher in plant metal nutrient acquisition and detoxification, focusing on how plants acquire essential nutrients such as iron and zinc, detoxify harmful metals and enhance nutritional quality through biofortification. His work addresses critical challenges in agriculture and human health, with direct relevance to food safety, crop productivity and international economic development. His research program has benefited producers worldwide, from avocado growers in the United States to cacao producers in Latin America.
Mendoza‑Cózatl is an exceptional educator and mentor, contributing to international training through invited lectures and graduate education initiatives. His service as an editor for leading scientific journals and organizer of international conferences further amplifies Mizzou’s global presence.
