Q: Why did you choose to come to the University of Missouri?
A: I was a high school senior in 2021, preparing to transition to college after a global pandemic that had kept me out of the classroom since I was 16. The idea of moving away from home and starting the next chapter of my life felt overwhelming. I toured several campuses with my family, but when I visited Mizzou, it immediately felt comfortable; it felt like home. I could genuinely see myself living and growing here for the next four years, and I’m grateful every day that I made that choice.
Q: Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
A: For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to work with animals. I grew up idolizing Steve Irwin, whose passion for wildlife conservation inspired my own. When choosing a career path, it was important to me that my work made a positive impact; something meaningful that benefits the world. Conservation allows me to do exactly that. By helping protect and sustain the natural resources we all depend on, I hope to ensure that future generations can enjoy and learn from them as much as we do today.
Q: Did you partake in any research, study abroad, or internship opportunities? What did you enjoy about those experiences?
A: During my undergraduate years, I had the opportunity to intern with the Missouri Department of Conservation and conduct undergraduate research under Dr. Halsey. Both experiences allowed me to work hands-on in the field with a variety of species and learn practical, applied skills. I especially appreciated the wide range of projects I worked on at MDC, which exposed me to diverse aspects of conservation and helped me understand how dynamic and collaborative the field can be.
Q: What is a favorite memory you have during your time in CAFNR?
A: When I reflect on my four years in CAFNR, it’s nearly impossible to choose a single favorite memory. I will say, my favorite part of CAFNR was meeting people who share similar interests and goals as me, and the bonds I was able to form with them. I’ve met some of the best friends I’ve ever had through class, and I am confident we’ll be friends for life.
Q: How did your degree program prepare you for the future?
A: My degree in Natural Resources has shaped who I am and how I understand the world. It broadened my perspective on conservation and gave me a deeper appreciation for the complexity of natural resource management. Through my coursework and hands-on experiences, I gained insight into the collaborative effort and long-term planning required to manage ecosystems responsibly and work toward a sustainable future.
Q: What are your future plans?
A: After graduation, I plan to enjoy a family trip to Mexico before beginning my career in January. I will be starting as a Research Associate at Altasciences in Auxvasse, Missouri. I’m excited to enter this next stage of my life, and I look forward to gaining valuable research experience as I continue to grow and develop in my career.
