Q: Why did you choose to come to the University of Missouri?
A: I’ve always said Mizzou is the perfect distance from home—far enough to give me a true college experience, but close enough to keep my mom and dad happy. In all honesty, I did what most people advise against: I only applied to and visited only one school. But I felt confident putting all my eggs in one basket because of CAFNR, and more specifically, the Agricultural Education faculty. They went out of their way to build a relationship with me even while I was still in high school, and that made a lasting impression. Through FFA and other events on campus, I had already experienced the Mizzou community, and it just felt like home, a place where I could grow both academically and professionally.

Q: Why did you choose to pursue your degree?
A: I chose to pursue a degree in Agricultural Education with an emphasis in Communication and Leadership because it offered the flexibility to tailor the program to my goals. As someone passionate about both education and the agricultural community, I felt a strong connection with the students and faculty in the program from the start. What I’ve especially appreciated is how often we get to apply what we learn in the classroom to real-world scenarios. Whether it was developing an educational program for adult learners or creating a website for an event planning business, many of our class projects involved collaboration with industry professionals. Since education, communication, and leadership are relevant across every field, this program has also allowed me to engage with students from a wide range of disciplines, which has been both enriching and inspiring.

Q: Did you partake in any research, study abroad, or internship opportunities? What did you enjoy about those experiences?
A: During my time in CAFNR, I pursued several professional development opportunities that were incredibly impactful. In the summer of 2023, I served as Leadership Director for Missouri FFA Camp, where I developed a leadership curriculum, trained State FFA Officers, and coordinated programming logistics for over 1,000 campers across six weeks. This experience was especially meaningful because I was simultaneously taking Dr. Mott’s Designing and Delivering Educational and Leadership Programs course, which directly prepared me for my summer at Camp Rising Sun. I now serve as a Teaching Assistant for that same class. In addition, I worked as a Peer Success Coach in the CAFNR Academic Programs Office, conducting mock interviews and supporting students in partnership with Career Services. I also served as a CAFNR Recruitment Intern, where I designed a recruitment curriculum and represented the college at various events. What I enjoyed most about all of these roles was the opportunity to help students of all ages recognize their potential and support them in reaching their academic and career goals. It was incredibly rewarding to be part of their growth journeys.

Q: What is a favorite memory you have during your time in CAFNR?
A: As a member of the Mizzou Student Foundation, I was invited to represent CAFNR at Mizzou’s Donor Recognition Weekend. This included attending the Jefferson Club Annual Dinner, an honorable evening celebrating and thanking the University’s most generous donors. What I took away from the Jefferson Club dinner was meaningful, as the alumni and donors in attendance were so passionate about giving back, whether through scholarships, mentorship, or simply staying involved with the university. I left that evening with a renewed sense of purpose, feeling that I, too, wanted to contribute to Mizzou’s legacy—not just through my career, but by staying connected as an alum. It was a powerful reminder that education isn’t just about what we receive, but about what we give back.

Q: How did your degree program prepare you for the future?
A:  My degree prepared me by combining a strong academic foundation with hands-on, real-world experience. The program allowed me to tailor my coursework to align with my personal and professional goals, which helped me develop a well-rounded skill set in program development, leadership theory, and strategic communication. What truly set it apart was the emphasis on experiential learning. Whether it was designing educational programs, leading workshops, or working with industry partners, I was constantly challenged to apply what I learned in meaningful ways. These experiences taught me how to think critically, communicate effectively, and lead with purpose; skills that are transferable to any industry. Additionally, the support and mentorship I received from faculty and peers played a huge role in my growth. They not only challenged me academically but also encouraged me to pursue opportunities outside the classroom that expanded my perspective and helped me feel confident stepping into my future.

Q: What are your future plans?
A:  After graduation, I will be attending graduate school at The Pennsylvania State University, where I’ll be pursuing a master’s degree in Education, Development, and Community Engagement. I’m also excited to serve as a Graduate Research Assistant during my time there. This next step will allow me to build on the strong foundation I gained through CAFNR, further develop my skills in learning and development, and deepen my understanding of how to create meaningful educational experiences that empower individuals and strengthen communities.
