Ben Knapp, associate professor in the School of Natural Resources, has been named the recipient of the 2026 CAFNR Outstanding Senior Teacher Award in recognition of his sustained excellence in teaching, mentorship, and innovative experiential learning. Knapp was honored at CAFNR’s Celebration of Excellence awards ceremony April 23.

Knapp is widely regarded for his clear, well‑structured instruction and his ability to make complex scientific concepts accessible, relevant and engaging. His courses emphasize critical thinking, applied learning and scientific literacy, combining strong classroom organization with hands‑on laboratory and field experiences.

Knapp has expanded learning opportunities beyond the classroom through experiential and global education. He developed and leads a study abroad program in Costa Rica that immerses students in tropical ecology, conservation and agroforestry systems, allowing students to apply foundational principles in diverse ecological and cultural contexts. Closer to home, he integrates real‑world forestry practice through field labs, prescribed fire training and applied projects at Baskett Forest.

Knapp is also a dedicated mentor and advisor who invests significant time in supporting undergraduate and graduate students through research, internships and career development.

“Dr. Knapp’s clarity, innovation, mentorship and dedication to scholarly teaching have had a lasting and measurable impact on students and colleagues alike,” said nominator Patrick Market, director of the School of Natural Resources.

Through innovative instruction, experiential learning and deep commitment to student success, Knapp exemplifies excellence in teaching within CAFNR.
