Research Summary

I’m currently working on a project to measure how floods impact farmers, which is more complex than it seems. Farm production changes each year due to weather, markets, and other factors, making it hard to isolate flood damage. Floods can prevent planting, destroy growing crops, or reduce yields, and it’s also challenging to measure how much protections like levees help. Beyond crops, floods can damage farm buildings, machinery, livestock, and the transport systems farmers rely on. My work focuses on carefully analyzing all these factors and how they interact to estimate agricultural losses from flooding.

Shokhrukh specializes in agricultural and environmental economics, water economics and policy, integrated water resource systems, and the water–food–energy nexus, with a focus on the complex interactions between biophysical and economic systems. His research employs theoretical, empirical, and numerical approaches and involves close collaboration with experts from diverse fields, including engineering, hydrology, soil science, and plant science.

Before joining the University of Missouri, he worked at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (Australia’s national science agency), the Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability at the United Nations University in Tokyo, and Aalto University in Helsinki, Finland. He has also served as a consultant for organizations such as the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs, the Stockholm International Water Institute, the International Water Management Institute, and the United Nations Development Programme on various aspects of natural resource economics and policy.

Originally from Tashkent, Uzbekistan, he earned his Ph.D. in Water Economics and Policy from New Mexico State University and his M.S. in Natural Resource Economics from North Dakota State University. He has professional experience in Europe, Australia, Central, South, and Southeast Asia.
