Get to Know Craig Schenck

Schenck is an assistant professor in Biochemistry

What are your job duties/job responsibilities in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources?

I am an assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry. As an assistant professor, my roles are varied, most of my time is dedicated to teaching and research. Our lab works on understanding how and why plants produce so many chemical compounds. One of the main functions of these compounds is defense. They are also useful for humans, for example some serve as medicines. So, we are also interested in harnessing plants to make more of these useful chemical compounds.

How long have you worked in CAFNR?

I’ve been at MU and CAFNR for 6 months. Previously, I was a postdoctoral researcher at Michigan State University.

What do you enjoy about working for CAFNR/Mizzou?

As a plant biochemist, the community of plant enthusiasts is the best part of MU. There is so much knowledge about all aspects of plants on campus and an environment that encourages collaboration. I also really enjoy interacting with the students that I teach. Our CAFNR students are incredibly engaged and excited to learn about biochemistry and how this knowledge translates to the real-world.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

My free time consists of my wife and I chasing two young kids around and trying to keep them busy and out of trouble. I also enjoy gardening and being outside. I like to run, bike, and explore the natural beauty of Columbia with my family.

What is something your co-workers/other CAFNR employees don’t know about you?

I used to compete in triathlons and once did an Ironman triathlon, back when I had more free time.
