It has been a busy, but very meaningful, month of travel and activity!

Seeing the room crowded with our scholarship donors and the students they support is always a highlight of the year for me. Thank you to our outstanding speakers, Dr. Angie Whitesell, biochemistry alumna, and her son, Owen Neely, a sophomore in biochemistry, who shared their CAFNR journeys and how scholarships aided them at our annual Scholarship Donor Recognition Dinner Thursday, Oct. 10.

Please plan to attend two upcoming speaking engagements at Mizzou:

  • Tuesday, Oct. 22, our own Eric Aldrich, assistant teaching professor of atmospheric science, will give the Maxine Christopher Shutz Lecture for Distinguished Teaching beginning at 5 p.m. in Stotler Lounge, Memorial Union. I am honored to give a welcome, along with Pat Market, director of our School of Natural Resources. The Maxine Christopher Shutz Award and Lecture for Distinguished Teaching, sponsored by the Office of the Provost, seeks to recognize faculty members who have demonstrated extra efforts to involve undergraduates in active learning experiences, and to personalize the undergraduate experience of students.
  • Thursday, Nov. 14, join Mun Y. Choi, University of Missouri President, at the 2024 President’s Distinguished Lecture featuring Harriet Kung, acting director of the Office of Science, U.S. Department of Energy. Her lecture, “Science for Energy,” will discuss the 21st century’s staggering challenges for more advanced energy technologies that are abundant, clean, and sustainable. The event will be at 10 a.m. in Monsanto Auditorium, Bond Life Sciences Center. The President’s Distinguished Lecture Series invites notable leaders of world-renowned research organizations, universities and other industries to share their expertise with the University of Missouri community.

So far in October I have:

  • Met with Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council Executive Director Gary Wheeler
  • Attended Council of Deans meetings
  • Attended 4-H Foundation’s 75th Anniversary Clover Gala
  • Traveled to St. Louis to meet with potential donors
  • Attended reception for newly promoted and tenured faculty
  • Traveled to the Johnny Morris Institute’s Southwest Missouri Wild Harvest Dinner
  • Participated in the 20th Cohort of Food System Leadership Institute Fellows conference in Raleigh, NC
  • Attended Missouri Innovation Center Executive Committee meetings
  • Met with Provost Matt Martens

Yet to come this month, I will:

  • Meet with Ernie Verslues, CAFNR Foundation President and CEO of MFA Inc.
  • Tour our Foremost Dairy Farm
  • Address Fellows at the World Food Prize meeting, Des Moines, IA

Please save the date for our annual Novemberfest event next month! I will share an update on the college, and then we will all share Thanksgiving-themed appetizers and desserts. It is a great opportunity to share our accomplishments and say “Thank You” each year. This year’s event will be held Friday, Nov. 22, from 3-5 p.m. in Monsanto Auditorium, Bond Life Sciences Center.

Have a wonderful Homecoming – and Missouri Chestnut Roast – weekend! M-I-Z!!
