Making soybeans smarter (click to read)
Making soybeans smarter »

Mizzou plant geneticist Ron Mittler is finding ways to breed soybean crops that can handle heat, drought and water-logging stresses, improving yields under pressure.

Ron Mittler is on a quest to create a smarter soybean. For years, mid-Missouri has withstood unpredictable weather patterns, including drought, heat waves and flooding — conditions that are known to hamper agricultural yields and make it difficult for farmers to produce. While we can’t control the weather, Mittler and his team are working to harness soybean crops’ natural ability to adapt to unfavorable weather conditions while also increasing their yields.

Working with $2.4 million from the National Science Foundation, Mittler hopes to add to his more than two decades of research by investigating the mechanisms behind how plants cool themselves while under heat and drought stress. He’ll achieve this by genetically engineering soybean plants in ways that improve their resistance to these stresses.

Three CAFNR faculty members named Curators’ Distinguished Professors

The University of Missouri Board of Curators recently named nine University of Missouri faculty members Curators’ Distinguished Professors and one Curators’ Distinguished Professor Emeritus, including three CAFNR faculty members. The professorship is the highest and most prestigious academic rank the Board of Curators awards. It is awarded to a select few outstanding scholars with established reputations. This year’s CAFNR recipients of the title of Curators’ Distinguished Professor are:

  • Mengshi Lin, Division of Food, Nutrition and Exercise Science
  • Bing Yang, Division of Plant Science and Technology
  • Xiaoqin Zou, Department of Physics & Astronomy in the College of Arts and Science with a joint appointment in CAFNR’s Division of Biochemistry

Plant Science & Technology professor named to Borlaug Training Foundation Board

Henry Nguyen, professor of plant science and technology, has been named to the Borlaug Training Foundation Board of Directors.

Nguyen’s research program focuses on molecular genetics, genomics and biotechnology. His long-standing research interest is abiotic stress adaptation and tolerance in plants with a current emphasis on soybean.

The Borlaug Training Foundation (BTF) is an independent, non-profit corporation, established to facilitate cutting-edge agronomic education and skills development under dynamic technological and climate-change scenarios for young scientists from low-and middle-income countries.

Five CAFNR faculty members named as Highly Ranked Scholars

Three faculty members in the Division of Plant Science and Technology, one in the Division of Animal Sciences, and a professor emeritus from Biochemistry, all in the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, have been named to the list of Highly Ranked Scholars on ScholarGPS.

Scholars listed include:

  • John Boyer, Distinguished Research Professor, Plant Science and Technology
  • Ron Mittler, Curators’ Distinguished Professor, Plant Science and Technology
  • Henry Nguyen, Professor, Plant Science and Technology
  • R. Michael Roberts, Professor Emeritus, Biochemistry
  • Tom Spencer, Curators’ Distinguished Professor, Animal Sciences

CAFNR faculty members have received the following recent grants (listed by Principal Investigator):
