Message from the Director
 (click to read)

We have bid some sad farewells to familiar faces this year and welcomed new ones. At the start of the last academic year, Professors Shuqun Zhang and Shari Freyermuth retired. Many of you will remember Dr. Zhang, one of our long-time instructors of senior laboratory, and for a generation or two, Dr. Freyermuth needs no introduction as advisor to many of our majors, among her several responsibilities. Dr. Alison Rutledge is doing remarkably well at filling her large shoes. In early June, Dr. Charlotte Phillips retired after a 30-year career, one of our School of Medicine faculty who will be remembered as an undergraduate research mentor par excellence.

We also welcome, as new faculty, Dr. Prashant Sonawane, an expert in synthesizing plant-derived steroids of pharmaceutical interest, and Dr. Curtis Nutter, who studies the biochemistry of neurological disorders.

The Biochemistry major continues to grow, in no small part due to these outstanding faculty members, as well as the exciting things that our alumni are doing post-graduation. Speaking of which – we hit an all-time record of 77% acceptance of Biochemistry majors applying to medical or dental school.

Go Tigers,
Dr. Michael Chapman
Director of Biochemistry
