CAFNR partners with Adelante Abroad for the summer Scotland Equine Studies program. CAFNR students have successfully participated in the Adelante program since its inception, particularly students with a pre-veterinary and/or equine studies emphasis. The program offers participants the opportunity to study in the beautiful Scottish countryside at Oatridge College.

Students will enroll in two courses: Equine Anatomy/Physiology and Equine Fitness.

In addition to classroom instruction, students will be involved in practical and hands-on experiences, with the opportunity to discover equestrianism ‘British’ style, and experience both classical and English-style riding skills. The program works with the Scottish National Equestrian Centre, so if a professional event is held during the time of the program, students may assist with some preparation. The Centre has one international-class indoor arena, a six-furlong all-weather gallop and an extensive acreage of good riding country where they annually host a British Eventing one-day-event.

Also included in this program are educational visits to several of the main cultural sites of Scotland and the internationally recognized Royal Highland Show. Past excursions have included Scone Palace, the Perth Races Gold Cup, a visit to Glasgow, the Bergie Horse Trials, Loch Lomand and The Trossachs, and the Inchailloch Island Nature Reserves.

Location

Located in Ecclesmachan, just 15 miles outside of Edinburgh, Oatridge College is recognized as Scotland’s foremost Equestrian College and is a member of the Scottish Equestrian Association (SEA) and the home of the Scottish National Equestrian Center. This is a wonderful opportunity to combine your interest in Equine Studies with a study abroad experience that will allow you to learn about the amazing Scottish culture.

Accommodation and Meals

Students will be housed in dormitories on the Oatridge campus. Rooms are individual and include private bathrooms. All housing costs are included in the program fee.

Most meals are included in the program cost. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are provided during the week, while breakfast and dinner are provided on the weekends. Students will be responsible for additional meal costs. Though the individual spending habits of each student will vary, please see the budget information below for an estimate of the average out-of-pocket meal expenses.

Program Travel

Students will arrange their own round-trip travel to Edinburgh and will be provided with suggested flight dates and arrival times. For budgeting purposes, estimates are provided below. Adelante will coordinate student pick-up from the Edinburgh airport and transfer to the Oatridge College campus.  Students who wish to have the cost of their flight billed directly to their MU accounts should contact the Director of Study Abroad, as this can be arranged through MU’s preferred travel agency. Once in Scotland, all program-related travel is included in the program fee.

Academics

Students will be enrolled in six credits of AFNR _0590, an International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources “placeholder” course. At the conclusion of the program, final grades are issued by Oatridge College. These credits transfer back to MU on an S/U basis.

In order to determine how Oatridge College credits will transfer back to MU, students should complete a Course Proposal for Study Abroad with assistance from the CAFNR Director of Study Abroad. Once this is completed, students will work with their advisors to determine how the credits will count toward their individual graduation plans.

Please be aware that there will be a mandatory orientation class meeting prior to departure. These meeting typically occurs in April. Dates and times for the meeting will be available shortly after the confirmed program participant list is finalized, generally around mid-March. Participants will be notified of the meeting details via email.
