Take Hospitality Management courses in Spain! Barcelona is a quintessential place for Spanish gastronomy and tourism.  Focused on industry-wide innovation, this program has become the international gold-standard in its field. Students work closely with experienced faculty and professionals in the field to develop specialized knowledge in a modern building containing technical kitchens, a resource center, student–run dining facilities, a café and more.  Classes are designed to stimulate creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, self-development and teamwork. Its focus on sustainability and efficiency truly makes this program a competitive one that allows students to develop in-demand professional skills for the global hospitality market and workplace.

Barcelona is a bustling city where students can explore the shops and restaurants of Las Ramblas, take in the mosaic artwork and magnificent architecture of Gaudí or spend the afternoon soaking up the sun on the beach. Not far from Dublin, London, Paris, Berlin or Rome, Spain is an ideal location for a semester abroad. In addition to coursework, students also have the opportunity to partake in Spanish cooking classes, art museum visits, a trip to the beach and a weekend in Seville.

Accommodation and Meals

Students will be housed in self-catered apartments with shared occupancy bedrooms. Upgraded private bedrooms are available at an additional cost. Typical residences house 2-8 students and contain a combination of private and shared bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom and living areas. Furnishings, a washing machine, basic kitchen supplies, bed linens and towels are provided. All apartments are equipped with wireless internet.

Students will be responsible for their own meal costs. Though the individual spending habits of each student will vary, please see the budget information below for an estimate of the average out-of-pocket meal expenses.

Program Travel

Students will need to go to Chicago to apply in person for their visa. Associated travel and fees are not included in the program cost.

SAI requires the COVID-19 vaccination, including a booster when eligible, prior to the program start date.

Students will arrange their own round-trip travel to Barcelona and will be provided with suggested flight dates and arrival times. For budgeting purposes, estimates are provided below. Students who wish to have the cost of their flight billed directly to their MU accounts should contact the Director of Study Abroad to make arrangements through MU’s preferred travel agency. Transportation from the Barcelona airport directly to your accommodation will be provided. Once in Barcelona, all program-related travel is included in the program fee.

Students will be enrolled in 12-15 credits of AFNR _0590, an International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources “placeholder” course. This “placeholder” enrollment corresponds to the 24-30 ECTS credits in which students will be enrolled at SAI. At the conclusion of the program, final grades are issued by SAI. These credits transfer back to MU on an A/F basis, with 24-30 ECTS credits transferring as 12-15 MU credits.  The estimated program fee below includes 12 MU credits.

Students must complete a Course Proposal for Study Abroad with assistance from the CAFNR Director of Study Abroad. Once this is completed, students will work with their advisors to determine how the credits will count toward their individual graduation plans.

Please be aware that there will be a mandatory orientation class meeting prior to departure. Participants will be notified of the class meeting details via email.
