Discover New Zealand’s South Island, home to some of the most spectacular natural wonders in the world! Completely integrate into campus life at a leading agriculturally-based university. Attend classes in agriculture, food and natural resources or try a course in Māori studies. With 4,500 students, Lincoln University’s student population allows for easy adaptation to semester abroad in New Zealand. Lincoln is also a very international campus with students from over 70 different countries, several clubs and activities to choose from, and an international office that assists students.
This program is based in Lincoln, a small town with about 3,000 people located only 20 minutes from Christchurch. The largest city on the South Island, Christchurch offers all the comforts of a major city with the feel of a much smaller, comfortable and laid-back town. The Southern Alps and the Pacific Ocean are only a short drive away and students are free to explore both islands during their semester break. Visit Hobbiton, glaciers, glowworm caves, beaches and geothermal pools or go see the famous blue penguins!
Accommodation and Meals
Students will be housed in Lincoln University accommodation. After being accepted into the program, CAFNR students will complete a Lincoln housing request form that allows them to select their preferred housing option (fully-catered or self-catered). Please note that Lincoln attempts to place students in their preferred housing options; however, due to space limitations and the allocation of room assignments to degree-seeking Lincoln students, neither CAFNR nor Lincoln can guarantee placement in a given student’s first choice option. All housing costs are included in the final program fee; the estimated program fee outlined below is based on the self-catered Lincoln housing option, the most popular option with past MU program participants.
Students should budget for out-of-pocket food expenses dependent upon the final Lincoln housing placement. For assistance in estimating this amount, please see the estimate below based on the self-catered housing option.
Students will arrange their own round-trip travel to Lincoln and will be provided with suggested flight dates and arrival times. For budgeting purposes, estimates are provided below. Students who wish to have the cost of their flight billed directly to their MU accounts should contact the Director of Study Abroad to make arrangements through MU’s preferred travel agency.
Students will be enrolled in 15 credits of AFNR _0590, an International Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources “placeholder” course. At the conclusion of the program, final grades are issued by Lincoln University. These credits transfer back to MU on an S/U basis.
In order to determine how Lincoln credits will transfer back to MU, students should complete a Course Proposal for Study Abroad with assistance from the CAFNR Director of Study Abroad. Once this is completed, students will work with their advisors to determine how the credits will count toward their individual graduation plans.
MU participants in the Lincoln program may choose from any of the 100, 200 or 300-level courses listed in the Lincoln schedule of courses as long as they possess the appropriate academic background for each course. Students will choose four Lincoln courses per semester for a total of 60 Lincoln credits (generally equivalent to 15 MU credits).
Note that the Lincoln academic calendar is opposite that of MU, so students should make sure that the courses they plan to follow are available during the semester they are planning to study at Lincoln: Semester 1 (MU’s spring semester) — February to June and Semester 2 (MU’s fall semester) — July to November.
Please be aware that there will be a mandatory orientation class meeting prior to departure. Participants will be notified of the class meeting details via email.
