Babu Valliyodan’s main research interests are to dissect abiotic stress tolerance mechanisms and yield improvement traits in plants through integrated genetics and genomics approach. His current research is focused on two major research areas : 1) Large scale sequencing of most diverse soybean germplasm in the US along with the generation of additional reference genomes and pan genomes for both cultivated and wild type soybeans using new generation sequencing technologies; 2) discover genomic regions affecting yield using whole genome sequencing technologies and provide this information to develop functional markers, and help developing genomics-assisted breeding strategies for better plant performance and enhanced yield. Genome sequence information and HapMap from these studies will help US soybean community to conduct genome wide analyses and identify alleles associated with agronomically important traits.
