2010 Outstanding Organization: Agricultural Education Society
The AGRICULTURAL EDUCATION SOCIETY seeks to develop a true professional spirit among those involved in agricultural education. It provides a place for agricultural education majors to meet students with the same interests and develop valuable leadership and communication skills.
Twelve members of society recently attended the National FFA Convention. They attended the Alpha Tau Alpha Conclave and participated in a Program of Excellence Competition, Parliamentary Procedures Contest and a Quiz Bowl. The Mizzou Chapter earned a first-place ranking in the Community Service competition.
The organization also participated in last fall’s CAFNR Week. The organization earned first-place in the Road Rally, Super Farmer Contest and Mud Volleyball. An AES member was named the CAFNR Week Queen. The organization was judged first-place, overall. In community service, AES sponsors an agricultural Boy Scouts Merit Badge program, an Agriculture in the Classroom event for elementary students and a FFA Practice Leadership Contest.
“I am proud of their service projects,” said Robert Terry, professor and chair, Department of Agricultural Education. “The group sponsored the third-annual CAFNR Boy Scout Merit Badge Center. This event benefitted more than 180 Scouts from Mid-Missouri. While some members facilitated the event, others served as instructors for the 10 badge courses taught. The Scouts not only advanced in Scouting, but gained knowledge and skills in the value of agriculture.”
