2009 Outstanding Freshman: Brandon Thiel
BRANDON THIEL, majoring in plant science with a biotechnology emphasis, began his work experience by working on a Missouri farm as a hired hand. He planted and harvested corn and soybeans. For the last four years, he has owned and managed 13.3 acres. Most recently, he secured a summer internship with Monsanto as a technology development intern where he will help market a drought-resistant variety of corn.
He has earned numerous achievements including a best project in a Supervised Agriculture Experience Program. He was also Alpha Gamma Rho's Outstanding Incoming New Member, a Missouri FFA Officer and a CAFNR Student Council Development Team Leader.
"During this time he has already done more for CAFNR and MU than most students do during their four years here."

"Brandon has only been an Alpha Gamma Rho member for seven months. During this time he has already done more for CAFNR and MU than most students do during their four years here," said one nominating letter. "He is dedicated to service as well, donating countless hours to those less fortunate than himself. He's mentored an elementary school student through the Big Brother program, donated blood several times each year and has worked in Florida to rebuild houses damaged by a hurricane."
"One of the biggest learning experiences for me was serving at the state FFA Camp this summer," Thiel said. "I gained skills to relate to 200 members at one time and be able to give a speech to all of those members."
Thiel's current career plans include being a seed breeder. "I want the opportunity to give back to the agricultural community that has given so much to me," he said.
