2008 Past President Award: William Newham

William Newham

WILLIAM (BILL) NEWHAM of Leawood, Kan. has a long history in agriculture production and publishing management.

Newham received his Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Master of Education degrees from the University of Missouri. Following graduation he spent six years as a vocational agriculture instructor in Missouri. He was named editor of Pork magazine in 1980. The magazine grew from last place in its market to first, based on advertising page sales. Newham later became publisher of the publication where he developed sales and editorial strategies to uniquely niche the publication to a rapidly changing marketplace.

In 1989, he was promoted to publisher of Pork, Swine Practitioner, Bovine Veterinarian, Meat & Seafood Merchandising magazines. In this capacity Newham directed the company’s entry into electronic media with development of Web sites and email newsletters.

Vance Publishing appointed Newham vice president and publishing director in 2000, responsible for strategic planning, budgeting and operational direction for six publications and related market properties in beef, pork and dairy production, veterinarian, and retail market channels. His work included the development and launch of Food Systems Insider. Newham was then named senior vice president at Vance Publishing, with responsibility for strategic planning and implementation for 13 publications in beef, pork and dairy, produce, crop production and related markets.

Currently serving as vice president and group publisher of Farm Journal Media with offices in Kansas City, he handles strategic planning, direction and implementation for three publications and the related market web sites, newsletters and events.

His professional affiliations include the National Pork Producers Council World Pork Expo Long Range Development Task Force, the American Business Media AgriCouncil, Missouri Department of Agriculture Development Fund Advisory Committee and the Pork Leadership Institute Advisory Committee to develop new national youth leadership.
