2017 Litton Lecture 170

Peter H. Raven, president emeritus of the Missouri Botanical Garden and George Engelmann Professor of Botany Emeritus at Washington University, presented the second Jerry Litton Lecture Tuesday, Oct. 3. Raven spoke on "Global Sustainability: How to Achieve It" to the crowd in Monsanto Auditorium. The lecture is coordinated by CAFNR and the Jerry Litton Fund for Agricultural Leadership. Litton was an alumnus of the college who was killed in an aircraft accident in 1976 after winning a Democratic primary bid for the U.S. Senate.

The cases of insects are always fascinating for attendees of all ages at South Farm Showcase. The 11th annual Showcase was held Saturday, Sept. 30, at the South Farm Research Center in Columbia. There were more than 60 venues spread throughout the South Farm Research Center and Jefferson Farm and Garden. New this year was the Taste of Mizzou tent and the Showcase Passport that encouraged children to explore the event.

CAFNR students had the opportunity to interact with industry professionals to discuss future career and internship opportunities at the CAFNR Career Fair Sept. 27. The event was held at the MizzouRec Complex in the Historic Brewer Fieldhouse.

Comm Fellows

Seven CAFNR faculty members participate in the first half of a four-day training session on communicating their research to the public, CAFNR Communications Fellows. This is the fourth group to be part of the program, presented by CAFNR alumnus Mary Schon. Faculty members get experience talking to the media and crafting presentations of varying lengths for a variety of audiences. The first session was Sept. 25 and 26, while the second session for 2017 will be Oct. 19 and 20.

Truman enjoyed a beautiful day on the links, along with CAFNR alumni, faculty, staff, students and friends Sept. 15 for the annual Tiger Ag Classic golf tournament. Tiger Ag Classic raised more than $29,500 this year and supports 30 College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) scholarships. The 2017 event took place at Lake of the Woods in Columbia, Missouri.
