Missouri Governor’s Conference on Agriculture
Dean Tom Payne and Associate Dean Marc Linit participated on a panel discussing the importance of academic research for the ag industry at the 2012 Missouri Governor’s Conference on Agriculture, Jan. 19-21, Kansas City. The event draws Missouri agriculture producers and agribusiness leaders and is hosted by Gov. Jay Nixon and Missouri Department of Agriculture Director Dr. Jon Hagler.

This visit by faculty members of Belgorod State University also included campus tours and trips to the St. Louis Arch and the Mississippi River. Chandev and Aleksandr Petin, dean of the College of Geology and Geography, Belgorod State University, gave a presentation on soils as indicators of climate change, and discussed possible joint ventures with CAFNR department of soils, environmental and atmospheric science faculty members. Their visit, and photos snapped while on it, ended up as a full-page spread in the Russian college’s magazine.

The CAFNR Science and Agricultural Journalism Program took time out from two weeks of intensive field reporting in early January in Costa Rica to take surfing lessons in Santa Rosa National Park. In the background are Breanne Brammer, left, and Maggie Hardwick, both first-year Science and Agricultural Journalism majors. In the foreground is Bill Allen, assistant professor of science journalism and leader of the class, “Covering Nature and Society in the Developing World.” They are posing on Playa Naranjo (Naranjo Beach), where they took lessons from ecotourism entrepreneur Eladio Castro. Tom Payne, CAFNR vice provost and dean; Marc Linit, associate dean for research and extension; Bryan Garton, associate dean and director, academic programs; Hong He, professor of forestry; and Dong Xu, department chair, computer sciences; met with the Chancellor and other leaders from the Northeast Agricultural University in China to discuss programmatic collaborations in research and instruction.
