Reading, United Kingdom
Program Overview
The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources (CAFNR) participates in a direct enrollment program with the University of Reading (UR) in the United Kingdom. Students live in UR dorms and take regular university courses with British students and faculty.
Students will become immersed in the British lifestyle and learning, which differs substantially from that of the USA.
Students become involved with British culture and its large population of international students, who comprise 20 percent of the 14,500 students at the University of Reading.
Location
Reading, with a population of 222,000, is located 40 miles west of London. Reading is a town of thriving businesses, with some of the best shopping in southern England. In Reading, the modern coexists with the traditional, both architecturally and culturally. One of the largest abbey complexes in England and old red brick homes still stand alongside the contemporary Hexagon building, an entertainment center that features drama and music performances.
Natural beauty also abounds near Reading as it has one of the most spectacular stretches of the Thames River. Reading is well-connected to the rest of England. For a pleasant day trip, students can hop on the train to London or visit other beautiful towns on the Thames River from Oxford to Windsor.
Academics
The University of Reading has three academic terms that are ten weeks long, one term in the fall and two in the spring. Students can attend UR for one term and receive 12 credits. Students will receive ten credits as transfer credit from UR and will sign up for an additional two credits through the University of Missouri. Before leaving for Reading, students must work with their academic advisors to determine the MU course equivalencies they will receive for the courses taken at the University of Reading.
Requirements
- 3.0 GPA
- Good academic standing.
- Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing.
- This program is open to all MU students.
Accommodation
Students live in private residence halls (dormitories) with shared bathrooms and have access to a communal kitchen. Students studying for one term must pay for the UR meal plan. Internet access is available in student rooms in the residence halls.
London is only a short train ride away! Trains run from London’s Waterloo and Paddington stations to Reading every 15 minutes.
