Rikoon named Curators' Distinguished Teaching Professor

Sandy Rikoon

J. Sanford (Sandy) Rikoon, professor of rural sociology and director of the Interdisciplinary Center for Food Security and the Community Food Systems and Sustainable Agriculture Program, was named a University of Missouri Curators' Distinguished Teaching Professor.

The professorship is among the most prestigious recognitions given by the University. It honors outstanding teachers with established reputations. Each professor is considered a resource for the entire University through such activities as giving lectures on other campuses, assisting in improving the quality of teaching at the University and engaging in teaching across divisional lines.

Curators' Teaching Professors serve for five years and receive an annual stipend.

Rikoon earned his Ph.D. from Indiana University. His research interests include environmental sociology, political ecology and food security.

University of Missouri System President Gary Forsee said the honor recognizes Rikoon's exemplary service to the University and his scholarship in rural and environmental sociology at a national and international level. "In addition, you have received enthusiastic endorsement from your peers for your record of scholarly publication and invocative style of teaching and mentorship," Forsee said.

Rikoon has written five books and 67 scientific articles since 1984. Among his awards and honors include the Ecological Society of America's Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellowship, William T. Kemper Fellowship for Teaching Excellence, University of Missouri Chancellor's Award for Teaching, CAFNR Outstanding Teacher Award, CAFNR Researcher of the Year and the University Gold Chalk Award for Graduate Education and Teaching.
