Career Workshops
MBTI and Career Choice
The first step in a successful search for your next step is self-assessment. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) can be a helpful tool in thinking about who you are and what you want in a career environment. Participants will take the assessment one week prior to the interpretation. Handouts and other resources will be provided for follow-up. Participants will:
- Be able to understand the language of the MBTI and determine how well you fit with the assessed type.
- Understand the importance of self-knowledge and self–awareness prior to searching for a career, internship or graduate school position.
- Begin to develop an "ideal" career checklist and language for describing career choice.
Resumes 101
Participants will explore the purposes of a resume from self-assessment to reference information to job/internship search. We will discuss the underlying marketing principles of building a resume. Then, participants will be given an opportunity to critique resumes as an HR person might. Cover letters will be discussed briefly. Handouts and other resources will be provided to assist students in writing their own resumes. Workshop lasts about one hour. Participants will:
- Be more confident in their ability to write their own resumes.
- Identify Career Services resources relevant to resume writing.
- Understand the purposes of a resume.
Ace the Interview
How should I prepare for an interview? What should I wear? Should I take anything with me? What are the types of questions to anticipate? Are there specific strategies for answering questions? Is it true that I should always ask two questions at the end of the interview? How do I follow-up?
This workshop will provide answers to these questions and give participants an opportunity to "practice" their own interviewing abilities. You will learn about resources on campus, including the Student Success Center mock interview program and Career Services' employer interviews. Workshop lasts about one hour. Participants will:
- Understand the importance of preparation and follow-up.
- Discuss types of interview questions and strategies for answering each.
- Apply the STAR method for answering behavioral-based questions.
- Identify campus resources available to assist in improving personal skills.
Job Search: Where Do I Want to Go and How Do I Get There?
The job/internship search is sometimes postponed due to misperceptions such as, "Getting a job should be fairly simple," or "Job search is so complicated I don't even know where to begin." This workshop will focus on the steps involved in conducting a professional search: self-assessment and awareness, knowledge of market, preparation of tools, connection with potential employers and follow-up and negotiation. Participants will leave with an action plan focused on the next steps. Workshop length is one hour minimum; it can be extended into a longer workshop. Participants will:
- Understand the stages in the job search process.
- Identify their own stage in job search and be able to clearly state personal "next steps."
- Identify campus resources to assist with the various stages of search.
Internships: If They Won't Hire Me Without Experience, How Do I Get Experience?
This workshop highlights the benefits of interning as well as methods used to land an internship experience. Participants will discuss how to prepare for the internship search from developing a target to preparing marketing tools. We'll review expectations of both students and employers as well as how to use the internship as a networking source. Workshop lasts about one hour. Participants will:
- Be able to define internship in terms of student and employer expectations.
- Be able to state personal reasons for interning.
- Know how to approach internship search in a professional manner.
- Be able to identify resources on campus and beyond for internship site sources and assistance.
- Discuss ways an internship supports personal and professional development.
Etiquette: The Art of Making a Positive Impression
Does the thought of a business reception frighten you? Do you know what to wear, how to introduce yourself and others and what to do with the business cards? Are you good at "small talk?" This interactive workshop will give you an opportunity to practice shaking hands, introducing dignitaries and initiating conversations. Workshop length is a minimum of one hour. Participants will:
- Develop personal strategies for meeting strangers and initiating conversations.
- Recognize appropriate opportunities for networking and successful follow-up strategies.
- Know how to introduce people based on relative rank, age and gender.

Personalization
Student needs and interests are always considered when planning a workshop. Although general objectives will be covered, every effort will be made to personalize to the audience. Also, if your needs are not met by the workshops listed, please let us know. Every attempt will be made to assist you by developing a new Career Services' workshop or suggesting other speaker resources.
Workshop Lengths
The workshop times listed are approximate. It is always possible to add exercises to extend a workshop. Requests for shorter periods of time are welcome; however, it may not be possible to cover all learning objectives in this case.
