Explore Who You Are and What You Want
- Clearly state strengths, skills, interests and values.
- Describe my ideal job environment.
Mapping the World of Work
- List several (two to six) careers that interest me.
- Know what potential careers entail in terms of education, entry-level positions and typical progression and salaries.
- Research employers and list 10 that are interesting possibilities.
- Identify at least three internships or experiences that enhance work knowledge/marketability.
Packing Your Bag: Tools You Need to Succeed
- Resume written and reviewed by a professional.
- Registered with the CAFNR Career Services and uploaded resume.
- Interview suit purchased, pressed and ready for debut.
- Know how my strengths, skills and passions relate to the positions I will pursue, and I can respond happily to "Why should I hire you?"
- Polished interview skills. I can answer typical behavioral-based questions.
- My e-mail and voice mail are appropriate for employers who may be contacting me.

- Developed a thirty-second "sound bite" to introduce myself to employers, alumni, etc.
- Stay up-to-date on my field of interest by reading periodicals or association news regularly.
Take Off!
- Check the CAFNR online job board regularly.
- Organize my contacts and jobs systematically to ensure timely and consistent follow-up.
- Create opportunities for networking, including using the CAFNR Connections alumni mentoring program and telling everyone what I am interested in.
- Follow-up after applying by calling employers to request an interview.
- Know my market value and am prepared for salary negotiation.
- Sending a thank-you to every person who interviews me.
