MU Research Facilities

The Life Sciences Center (LSC) serves as a hub for life sciences research and education across the entire campus. LSC provides about 134,000 assignable square feet for 40 faculty to conduct research in interdisciplinary clusters. Faculty, staff, student and postdoctoral fellow research aims to improve food quality and safety, prevent and treat disease and protect the environment.

Service Centers

University-wide service centers provide the equipment and expertise for modern research while keeping costs at reasonable levels.

  • The Cell and Immunobiology Core provides custom monoclonal antibodies, flow cytometric analysis and tissue culture reagents.
  • The DNA Core provides DNA sequencing, genotyping, SNP detection and analysis and microarray services and support for computer analysis of sequence data.
  • The Electron Microscopy Core provides consultation, training and services for research requiring scanning or transmission electron microscopy.
  • The Molecular Cytology Core is a resource for light microscopy, immunocytochemistry, in situ hybridization techniques and general scientific image processing.
  • The Proteomics Center offers state-of-the-art technologies in protein and peptide analysis.
  • The Structural Biology Core provides technical expertise in protein purification and crystallization and instrumentation for NMR Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis.
  • The Transgenic Animal Core creates transgenic and knockout mouse lines.
  • The National Institutes of Health recently awarded MU a National Swine Research and Resource Center (NSRRC). The center is located adjacent to the Animal Science Research Center. NSRRC houses the infrastructure for cryopreservation and store gametes, embryos and somatic cells. Research projects conducted here will improve methods for the production of transgenic and knockout pigs. The center will serve as a national resource for training and education related to swine research.
