Research Focus

  • Development of methods of estrous cycle control for beef cows and heifers

Research Description

Patterson's research focus is on the development and evaluation of economical methods of estrous cycle control for replacement beef heifers and postpartum suckled beef cows.

Specifically, Patterson is working on the development of estrus synchronization for peripubertal beef heifers with melengestrol acetate (MGA), gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH), and prostaglandin F2a (PGF2a).

In addition, Patterson is developing a protocol for cycling and anestrous postpartum beef cows that will effectively synchronize estrus and ovulation to allow for artificial insemination at a fixed time.

Finally, Patterson is also developing a supplementation program that will enhance response to estrus synchronization through improvements in cyclicity rates of heifers and cows at the start of the breeding period.
