Research Description

Green's primary research goal is the examination of the interactions that take place at the placenta-uterine interface with a particular emphasis on the molecular events involved in trophoblast and endometrium differentiation and gene expression.

Green's research centers on pregnancy-associated glycoproteins (PAGs) and Trophoblast Kunitz Domain Proteins (TKDPs). The PAGs comprise a large gene family expressed by trophoblasts of species within the Artiodactyla order (ruminants, camels and pigs). These proteins are present in the maternal circulation and serve as useful markers of pregnancy.

Current studies are centered on understanding PAG function in ruminant reproduction. The TKDPs, like the PAGs, are secretory products of trophoblast. They belong to the Kunitz family of serine proteinase inhibitors. Most are expressed throughout gestation, although their maximal expression is around the time of implantation. Recombinant forms of these proteins have been generated to examine the proteinase inhibitory activity of the Kunitz domains and to identify proteins with which they can associate in vivo and in-vitro.

In addition, Green is interested in expression profiling of the conceptus and endometrium during early pregnancy. The goal of this work is to examine global changes in gene expression due to developmental changes and hormone/drug treatments.
