Research Focus

  • Ovarian endocrine function
  • Follicular development

Research Description

Garverick's interests are directed toward understanding the endocrine, cellular and molecular mechanisms that regulate ovarian function in cattle.

Studies include examining the control of follicular growth and atresia and maintenance and regression of the corpus luteum. Cellular endocrine mechanisms investigated involve both intraovarian and extraovarian influences. Extraovarian control includes the secretions of the hypothalamus, pituitary, ovary and the uterus and their interrelationships. Studies with intraovarian secretions examine both steroid and peptide compounds.

Specifically, Garverick's recent experiments have investigated changes in gene expression associated with recruitment of a cohort of follicles and selection of the dominant follicle in cattle. In addition, abnormal follicular growth (ovarian follicular cysts) and development is being studied.
