Research Focus
- Sperm maturation
- Testicular steroidogenesis
Research Description
Ganjam's primary goal is to elucidate the precise mechanisms involved in mammalian sperm maturation. Sperm acquire or develop the capacity for fertilization only during their transit through the epididymis, and knowledge of the sperm maturational process should enable its manipulation.
Ganjam's goals include clarifying the factors regulating epididymal 5a-reductase activity, understanding distribution and kinetics of epididymal androgen receptors, and establishing the interaction of androgen receptors and the epididymal 5a-reductase gene expression.
Currently, Ganjam is also investigating the putative role of 11b-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (11-HSD) in both testicular steroidogenesis and in epididymal physiology.
