McNair Scholars Program

Juniors and seniors heading for graduate school can get a head start on research experience through the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program. The U.S. Department of Education established the program to honor Ronald E. McNair, who died aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1986.

About the Program

Participating students receive a stipend of $2,800 to fund a research or scholarly project. The student conducts the project with the assistance of a faculty mentor. Projects require 40 hours per week for eight weeks during the summer semester. During the fall or winter semesters, projects require at least 10 hours per week.

In addition to doing the research or scholarly project, students attend McNair Program conferences, seminars and workshops. Upon completion of the project, students present a research paper.

Objectives

The program goal is to increase graduate school enrollment among first-generation college students with low incomes and among minority students.

Program Requirements

Participants must fit one of these categories:

  • Eligible applicants must have a 2.7 cumulative GPA and at least 60 hours of college credit.
  • Eligible applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
  • Participants must maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout the project.
