Missouri is a horse state. According to a study commissioned by the American Horse Council Foundation in 2005, there are more than 280,000 horses in the state, more than 70 percent of which are involved in showing and recreation.

Equestrian Science

Horses also are big business. The AHC study estimated the Missouri horse industry produces goods and services valued at $718 million with a total employment impact of 56,000 jobs.

Such an industry demands highly trained individuals. If you're interested in learning more about the science of horsemanship, then consider earning a minor in equestrian science.

Through a unique partnership with Stephens College in Columbia, MU students may enroll in equestrian science courses at Stephens, taking advantage of the school's indoor stable, rich variety of horse breeds, and the means to maintain and nurture them.

The minor in the equestrian program requires the completion of 18 hours of coursework, of which 6 hours must be at or above the 300 level. The Stephens' equestrian curriculum includes applied riding courses in Western riding, Saddle seat and Hunt seat; riding theory; equine management; teaching horsemanship; and stable management.
